Leave Space, Stay Safe
Rear-end collisions remain one of the most common types of crashes on Canadian roads. In many cases, they happen because drivers are following too closely or are distracted for just a moment. While some incidents result in minor damage, others can lead to serious injuries or worse.

One of the simplest ways to reduce your risk is to leave enough space between your vehicle and the one ahead of you. Under normal driving conditions, aim to stay at least three seconds behind the vehicle in front. In rain, snow, fog, or heavy traffic, increase that distance even more.

A good way to measure safe following distance is to choose a roadside marker such as a sign or pole. When the vehicle ahead passes it, begin counting. If you reach the marker before you finish counting three seconds, you are following too closely.

Tailgating can happen to anyone. If another driver is following too closely behind you:

  • Stay calm and avoid reacting aggressively
  • Keep your attention focused on the road ahead
  • Change lanes safely if possible
  • Avoid sudden braking
  • If you feel unsafe, make a safe turn or head to a public place or police station
Defensive driving is about expecting the unexpected and giving yourself enough time to react safely. A little extra space can make a big difference.

Drive safely, Windsor-Essex.
