Motorcycle Insurance - Why a Review Could Save You
As the weather warms up and riders across Ontario get ready to hit the open road, it’s the perfect time to give your motorcycle insurance a tune-up. Just like your bike needs regular maintenance, your insurance policy also deserves an annual review. Whether you’re planning weekend rides or long cross-border adventures, making sure your coverage is current can help you avoid surprises—and save money.

Why Review Your Motorcycle Insurance?

Your motorcycle insurance policy may not have changed, but your lifestyle or riding habits likely have. Here’s why reviewing your policy now makes sense:

You Could Be Overpaying: Insurance markets change. New discounts, better rates, and improved coverage options may be available. Shopping the market each year can potentially save you hundreds of dollars, especially if your current provider hasn’t updated your policy in a while.

Changed Usage or Storage? If you’ve added kilometres, started commuting, or upgraded your storage security, these factors can affect your premium.

Modifications Matter: If you’ve made changes to your bike (performance upgrades, new accessories, custom paint), your policy should reflect those updates to ensure you’re properly covered.

New or Young Riders: If someone new will be using the bike or a family member recently obtained their motorcycle license, your policy needs to be updated accordingly.

Planning a Road Trip? Read This First.

If you're heading outside of Ontario—or Canada—on your motorcycle this year, there are important insurance considerations: Cross-Border Coverage: While your Ontario motorcycle insurance generally includes liability coverage for riding in other Canadian provinces and the U.S., verifying the extent of coverage with your broker is essential. You may need a “Canada and U.S.” endorsement.

Medical Emergencies: Out-of-province or U.S. travel exposes you to potential medical expenses not covered by OHIP. You’ll need emergency medical travel insurance for full protection—motorcycle-specific if possible.

Towing and Roadside Assistance: Not all roadside plans include motorcycles, especially outside of Ontario. Double-check your policy or consider adding a dedicated rider assistance package.

Other Reasons to Revisit Your Policy

  • Bike Value Has Changed: Some motorcycles appreciate, especially vintage or limited-edition models. Your insurance should reflect the current market value.
  • Storage & Theft Prevention: Improvements like locked garages or security systems may make you eligible for rate reductions.
  • Bundling Opportunities: If you now have home, auto, or boat insurance, bundling policies can offer multi-line discounts.
