Love it or hate it, winter is about to settle into Windsor and Essex County. We’ve compiled a list to help you take action against potential costly damage to your home.
- Test and replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Check the manufacturer’s recommended replacement date.
 - Have your furnace, wood stove and all other heating sources inspected, maintained and cleaned before the cold settles in. Remember to clean them regularly and replace filters as necessary.
 - If you’re going on vacation, turn your water off, keep the heat on and ask a trusted person to check on your home regularly while you’re away.
 - Turn off and winterize outdoor faucets and run water through your less-often used plumbing fixtures regularly. Fit exposed pipes with insulation sleeves or wrapping to help prevent freezing.
 - Test to ensure your plumbing shutoff valves are working properly.
 - Inspect your roof and eavestroughs for ice dams. Check in your attic for frost accumulation, as this may be a sign of future problems.
 - Always keep your sidewalks, driveway and exterior stairs free of snow and ice. Be certain snow is also removed around gas appliance vents, exhaust vents and basement windows.
 - Trim tree branches around your home which are also close to hydro wires.

A little prevention can save you time and money this winter!
