When Adult Children Move Back Home - Insurance Implications
With the rising cost of living, inflation, and challenging home prices across Windsor-Essex, more families are finding creative ways to help their adult children get ahead financially. For some, that means welcoming their children back home after college, university, or a few years of living independently. For others, it means helping with a down payment on their first home.

A recent RBC study found that as the cost of living rises and housing affordability declines across Canada, more parents are helping their adult children cover everyday expenses.

  • 51% of Canadian parents provided financial support to an adult child in the past year.
  • Nearly one in three (32%) parents with children aged 18 to 40 say their children are not yet financially independent.
  • Much of this support goes toward everyday necessities, including groceries (56%), rent (24%), and utilities (21%).
While these arrangements can provide valuable financial relief, they also come with important insurance considerations that families may overlook.

When Your Adult Child Moves Back Home

Whether your child is moving home temporarily to save money or staying longer while planning their next steps, it's a good idea to review your home insurance policy.

Here are a few things to consider:

  • Personal belongings: Your adult child may be bringing furniture, electronics, and other valuable possessions. Are these adequately covered under your existing policy?
  • Liability coverage: Depending on your policy, your personal liability insurance may cover an adult child living at home. It's important to confirm.
  • Auto insurance: If your child will drive a family vehicle or keep their own vehicle at your address, you should inform your auto insurance provider.
  • Separate living spaces: If you're converting a basement into an apartment or creating a separate living area, changes to how your home is used may affect your coverage.
Even if the arrangement is temporary, a quick conversation with your insurance broker can help identify potential coverage gaps.

Helping Your Child Buy Their First Home

Instead of having their children move back home, some parents choose to help financially by gifting or lending money toward a down payment.

Before providing financial assistance, it's important to understand the difference between a gift and a loan.

A gifted down payment generally requires documentation confirming that the money does not need to be repaid. A loan, however, may affect your child's mortgage qualification and should be properly disclosed to their lender. Families should consider seeking legal and financial advice before making these arrangements.

Once your child buys a home, they'll also need to arrange appropriate home insurance, as required by their mortgage lender.
