Usage-based auto insurance, or UBI, is a type of Ontario auto insurance that uses information about how much, or sometimes how, you drive to help determine what you pay.
In addition to traditional rating factors such as your vehicle, driving record, age, location, and claims history, a usage-based program adds real-world driving data to the calculation. Essentially, UBI also factors in driving habits to help determine premiums.
For drivers in Windsor, Essex County and surrounding communities, these programs may be worth exploring, particularly if you drive relatively few kilometres or have consistently safe driving habits.
How does usage-based insurance work?
There are generally two approaches.
- Mileage-based or “pay-as-you-drive” insurance focuses mainly on how far your vehicle travels. A device installed in the vehicle may record kilometres driven, while an app or online portal lets you monitor your usage.
- Driving-behaviour telematics programs look at more than mileage. Using a smartphone app or connected device, an insurer may measure factors such as acceleration, braking, speed, time of day, distance travelled and phone use while driving.
Programs differ considerably, so drivers should review exactly what data is collected and how it affects pricing before enrolling.
How could UBI affect your premium?
The biggest attraction is the chance to pay less.
If you work from home, are retired, have a second vehicle, carpool regularly or simply do not drive very far, a mileage-based program may better reflect your actual vehicle use. Ontario insurers already consider annual kilometres when calculating conventional premiums, since greater time on the road generally means greater exposure to collisions.
A driving-behaviour program can also reward habits associated with lower risk.
However, usage-based insurance does not automatically mean a lower premium. Some programs are primarily designed to provide discounts, while others can adjust premiums upward or downward based on recorded behaviour. Your basic premium also continues to reflect traditional rating factors such as your driving history, vehicle and location.
That distinction is important when comparing programs.
What about privacy?
Telematics can collect detailed information about where, when and how a vehicle is driven. Depending on the program, that can include kilometres, GPS location, speed and other vehicle or smartphone information.
Drivers should therefore read the program's privacy terms carefully and understand what information it collects, who has access to it, and how it can be used. Ontario's earlier UBI regulatory guidance emphasized informed consent and transparency around telematics information, principles that remain important when deciding whether a program is right for you.
Usage-based insurance offers Ontario drivers another way to personalize the cost of coverage; however, like any insurance product, the value depends on how you actually drive. If you have questions about usage-based insurance, please give us a call: 519-736-8228
